Welcome to the University of East London
A leading modern university
The University of East London is a dynamic university at the cutting edge
of cultural and technological change. In an increasingly competitive and highly
skilled economy, we are developing programmes of teaching and research that
are practical, innovative and relevant, meeting the needs of students and industry
alike.
We are now recognised as one of the UK's leading modern universities, and our researchers are engaged in work of national and international importance across a wide range of disciplines. According to the results of the most recent government research assessment exercise, UEL is among the top ten post-1992 universities in the UK for research.
For teaching, we are rated among the leading post-1992 universities in the UK by The Guardian and are among the top 15 UK universities for graduate starting salaries, according to The Sunday Times.
In 2005, a team from the government's Quality Assurance Agency conducted a thorough audit of UEL, resulting in the best possible award of 'Broad Confidence' in the soundness of our management, the quality of our programmes and the academic standards of our degrees and other awards.
With over 20,000 students from more than 120 countries, the University of East London is now a global community. We have forged close partnerships with other leading universities and colleges worldwide, and many of our programmes are now available by distance learning.
Creating a 21st century campus
UEL's ultra-modern Docklands campus has become one of the most instantly
recognisable locations in London. With a stunning waterfront location adjacent
to the Royal Albert Dock, innovative architecture and colourful halls of residence,
the campus is an exciting and inspirational place to live, work and study.
We are currently completing a £110 million campus redevelopment programme at Docklands and Stratford, creating a modern learning environment with a dazzling range of facilities, including new purpose built libraries, laboratories, studios, IT and multimedia suites, and our Knowledge Dock Centre providing services to industry. We are above all a networked university, and our students enjoy free internet services and 24 hour access to library and learning resources.
Building success through innovation
Learning is about adapting to change by developing new knowledge and skills;
UEL is a learning community that seeks to meet the needs of all students through
a uniquely flexible, student-centred approach, and in recent years has established
a reputation as a dynamic learning environment at the cutting edge of technological
and cultural change.
Highly rated fields of study include Anthropology, Architecture, Media Studies, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Social Policy, Sociology and Sports Science. We achieved maximum scores for graduates' job prospects in Anatomy & Physiology (Physiotherapy), Architecture and Sports Science, and maximum scores for inclusiveness in fifteen fields, including Architecture, Art and Design, Biosciences, Business Studies, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Education, Sociology, Law and Psychology, more than any other UK university.
We are also among the top 15 UK universities for graduate starting salaries, according to The Sunday Times, ahead of such prestigious institutions as Nottingham, Warwick, Durham and York.
We have long been recognised for our innovative academic programmes. For example we were the first university to offer degree programmes in Physiotherapy, an area we continue to develop with our new Centre for Physiotherapy, Podiatry and Sports Science.
Today, we offer the widest and most exciting range of media, multimedia and creative industry programmes in the UK, and have leading centres for Refugee Studies, International and Human Rights Law, and Psychology.
Our research and scholarship
In research, as in teaching, innovation is key to our success. Our strong performance in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise has put us in the top ten of the post-1992 universities for research*, and has confirmed the international standing of individual Schools.
We are committed to developing research and scholarly activity across all academic areas, to underpin teaching and learning and create a culture in which all students and staff are engaged in new knowledge. Our research activities are particularly focused in areas relevant to our regional development, particularly in the arts, design, cultural and creative industries, health and social care, psychology, economic and social regeneration.
UEL's research institutes, centres and groups work across a range of disciplines including psychology, international law, health and sports science, anthropology, bio-mechanics, pipeline technology, communications, media and cultural studies, the performing arts, multimedia and games, architecture, cinema and film, information security and computer forensics.
Carrying the torch for 2012
The success of the London bid for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in 2012 has turned the eyes of the world towards East London and provided a dramatic new impetus for development in the region.
In March 2006, UEL organised an international conference, Host Cities: Education, Culture and Regeneration, which attracted leading experts from all over the world and was opened by the Rt Hon Richard Caborn MP, Minister of State at the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.
Researchers and policy development staff at UEL are providing expert advice and consultancy on topics including urban planning, transport, community sports development and public engagement. We are closely involved in the development of legacy infrastructure, and are working with our partner agencies and universities including Bath, Loughborough and UCL to create new world-class sports science facilities and deliver the best possible outcomes for people in East London.
The London East Research Institute at UEL is organising public debate around the bid, delivering community consultation and undertaking studies investigating the impact of regeneration on local communities. www.uel.ac.uk/londeoneast
Knowledge Dock for innovation and enterprise
As well as internationally recognised research, we play a key role in the economic, cultural and social development of our region. We are situated at the heart of the London Thames Gateway, one of the biggest regeneration sites in Europe, and are working with our partners on a range of projects relating to health, housing, education, transport, community infrastructure and social enterprise.
We are leaders in the growing area of university-business partnership, and have attracted public and private support to set up the Knowledge Dock Centre at UEL, providing expertise and consultancy to industry and the public sector. Knowledge Dock now works with over 2,000 businesses and entrepreneurs, and offers a growing range of services and expert centres including the Fabric Print and Design Bueau (FabPad), Product Design Lab, Simlab, Inventors Club, the HotHatch incubation facility, and MAGIC, the Multimedia and Games Innovation Centre.
